CHAPTER THIRTY ONE

TANNER WAS RELAXING on the bench seat in his cabin cruiser’s open cockpit, a book in one hand, a glass of wine in the other, when his phone rang on the table beside him.

With the sun sinking fast and Jenny still not back, he automatically assumed it was her, letting him know that she was going to be late.

Exchanging the glass of wine for his phone, he raised an eyebrow as he saw that it wasn’t Jenny calling, but DS Gilbert.

With an unsettling feeling in the pit of his stomach, he answered the call.

‘Hi, Vicky. What’s up?’

‘Sorry to disturb you so late, but I’ve just had Forrester on the phone. Another body’s turned up.’

‘Where?’ asked Tanner, staring over at his half-empty glass of wine, calculating how much he’d had to drink.

‘At the entrance to an industrial estate, on the banks of the River Bure.’

Wracking his brains to picture an industrial estate anywhere near the River Bure, he heard Vicky add, ‘Just outside Great Yarmouth.’

Pushing himself up straight, Tanner pressed the phone against his ear. ‘Please don’t tell me it was a man out walking his dog.’

‘It was a man, yes, and a dog has been found at the scene. How did you know?’

‘Police intuition,’ Tanner sighed. ‘Has he been identified yet?’

‘Not as far as I know.’

‘And I suppose Forrester wants me to head over there?’

‘He’s asked us both to go.’

‘OK, if you can text me the location, I’ll meet you there.’

Ending the call, he stood up, turned his book over to leave it upside down on the table, and called Jenny’s mobile.

Cursing when it rang through to voicemail, he tried again, hoping she’d simply not been able to reach it in time. When it still wasn’t answered, he felt he had no choice but to leave her a message.

‘Jen, hi, it’s John. Vicky’s just called. Another body’s been found, in Great Yarmouth. I’m going to head over there now. I think – I think it might be Chris Street.’

He paused for a moment, choosing his words carefully.

‘Assuming it is,’ he said, ‘I don’t think you should come back here tonight. Not when I’m not around. It may be better if you stayed with…’ he was about to say a friend, when he realised that by doing so he’d be inviting her to stay with Robert Ellison. Instead he came up with, ‘…with your parents. Anyway, look, I’ll give you a call when I’ve finished in Great Yarmouth. Maybe you could text me when you get this? OK, got to go. Speak soon.’
